What advice can you give someone starting their first job?

I'm starting my first job tomorrow (Retail) and I'm really worried. What if I take too long ringing people up at the register, or I forget to remind them about the credit card they can get, or if someone comes in to yell at me for something not being up to their standards?

Any advice on ways to relax on the first day of the first job and avoid a total meltdown? What advice can you give someone starting their first job?
Good luck! You'll do fine. Relax, let your personality come through - that's what you were hired for, right?

As the others have said, do what you're told, and ask for clarification if something seems unclear. Since you're new, they'll cut you some slack, but pay attention so you don't have to ask the same thing a million times - that gets old real fast.

If a customer yells at you, be very polite. You cannot yell back. Just be calm and cool and ask what you can do to help fix the problem. If you cannot, and they still want to yell, offer to put them in touch with your manager - that should cool them off.

When you feel worried (and you likely will - first-job jitters), just take a deeeeeeeep breath, hold it for a second, then expel it slooooooooooowly. It will help calm you down.

Smile. Whatever happens, just smile. Be nice, be kind.

Everything else will fall into place as time goes by.

Oh, don't forget to save part of your earnings (at least 10%) and put some of it away for education, too! :)

Good luck!

I felt the same way when I started my first job. You gotta remember your new you'll warm up to things. Just do what your asked of and try to relax after you get the hang of it you'll be great.

Smile

Ask questions if you do get stuck. Employers know your serious about your job when you ask what to do rather than just guess, shows you care.

Remind yourself you'll get the hang of it.
just remember that what you forget today, you'll remember, in time

with practice you will be an expert in no time

be gentle and patient with yourself and others...

pat yourself on the back when you know you did something good

there will many more jobs besides your first, but there has to be a first....
Keep your head down and do what your told, and ask questions when needed. Thats what i did and my boss liked me and gave me a whole bunch of hours my first check after two weeks was around $400
It's your first job no one cares. And if they care bad enough to yell at you go tell your supervisor. Retail sucks by the way but try to enjoy it...
You will be fine.

Just beware of fake dollar bills.
Good Luck
