Any advice on homeschooling my children and how to get started?

I want to homeschool my children, I just don't know how to get started.Any advice on homeschooling my children and how to get started?
Angela, good luck to you as you investigate this choice. There are many wonderful resources. But start with state laws, then get in touch with your local homeschooling organizations for more information. Get hooked up with a local Yahoo group for support and to have specific, local questions answered and see opportunities for your children within the homeschooling community.

Then there are numerous books in the library to read regarding styles of homeschooling, the history of the development of the public education system in the US (assuming you are in the US), and so forth.

And I just can't resist.......to Kia........Arrogance is not pretty and ignorance is not bliss!

I would hazard to guess that most public school students, let alone public school teachers could not answer those questions. For crying out loud, most of my instructors in undergraduate classes were T.A.'s who could barely speak English and were only teaching for the money, and were 15 yrs. my junior.

Homeschoolers are faced with questions like this everyday. It would not be unusual to have a 5th or 6th grader ask about the human genome project. This is what we would call a teachable moment. At this point we would have them identify what they wanted to know (mine would of course say ';everything';) and off we would go on a learning adventure. Homeschooling, if done well, is teaching a child to learn, investigate, search, be curious, ask questions. It is not spoon feeding facts to an unwilling recipient glued to a chairseat.

And as far as what parents want for their children..... They want their children to be happy, self sufficient, to be engaged and involved citizens. I don't want my child to feel dependent on someone to make a job for them....I want them to believe that they can build a company if that is what they want to do. To create jobs not fill them. I want them to create beautiful art if that is their bliss. I want them to BE an inspiration to others, not search for inspiration from that which is common and ordinary. I want them to be able to think, not regurgitate. I want them to lead, not be trained to follow mindlessly.

AMENAny advice on homeschooling my children and how to get started?
Oh, here we go with the ';homeschoolers aren't socialized'; crap again.

Some people are so ignorant. Do they not realize that school is not the ONLY place kids can make friends? Geeze.

Anyway, the way to get started would be to research what kind of schooling you want to do. Traditional book learning, online classes, etc.

Depending on what kind of schooling you choose you will need to research curriculums. You don't have to get the same curriculums for all 3 kids and you don't have to get just one--you can mix and match. That's the great thing about homeschooling--it's personalized so every child can learn the way that is best for them.

Then, depending on where you live you'll have to check and see what homeschooling laws there are. Some states require that you spend so many hours learning, and so many hours a week for gym, etc.

That's basically it. Pretty easy. Homeschooling can be expensive if you buy everything new. You can always check sites like Ebay for cheap deals...usually brand new or gently used books that are much cheaper.

To give you an idea, my mom homeschools 3 kids and it was about $1,000 for all of our books (combined). Much cheaper than public school when you think about it...no spending money on tons of new school clothes, no money on school lunches, no need for backpacks or lunch boxes, school fees, etc. When you think about it, $1000 is pretty reasonable.

As far as socialization goes you can join homeschooling groups, youth groups, play groups, or get your kids enrolled in art classes or sign them up for sports. They'll have more friends than any public schooler could dream of having.

And ignore the ignorant answer above mine. So parents are not smart enough to teach their own children? Wow, that's a sad argument. You could walk into any public school and ask a certified teacher those same questions and they wouldn't know the answers.

Take a look at statistics---homeschoolers tend to be smarter! Colleges actually seek out homeschoolers because we are smarter and we're better achievers.
I started homeschooling in 7th grade....it is really fun. the younger your children are, the more you have to work with them...once they get into 7th grade, everything is kind of on their own....i would join a homeschool association. start off on a curriculum... classical conversations is good if you are christian...join a co-op...if you join a co - op, you will meet lots of new friends ( i met one of my best friends homeschooling) , and it will make things easier to understand
I homeschooled my daughter and son, who are now graduated from college. I would suggest that the first thing to do is find homeschool support groups in your area. Networking is everything, because you get a wide variety of ideas about what curriculum to use, field trip possibilities, joint learning projects, co-op classes, friends for your children and for yourself. Go into homeschooling having the attitude that you are also a student and an active member of your homeschool group community. The best thing about homeschooling is that it allows you to tailor learning to your children's interests. My friend one told me that she does necessarily see herself as her son's teacher but as a tour guide, finding for them the resources they need for learning. I used ABEKA curriculum for Language and spelling. And I used ABEKA's social studies and history texts, but I found that my children learned best when they explored through additional reading that they chose for history. Saxon math is a good program, but apply it to real life. That is the great thing about homeschooling is that everything you do becomes a learning opportunity. It also allows for children to become responsible about their own laundry and chores and to commit their passions to music, sports, and other hobbies. Find a variety of support groups in your area. Churches are a good start for finding contacts or just google.
Check out this site to find out what the laws are in your state:

http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp

To find good advice from people in your area, search Yahoo Groups for your city...like Houston Homeschoolers, Des Moines Homeschool, etc...I have several in my area and the people are really helpful. After joining a group, searching in the logs for any old questions and answers about getting started might help.

Edit: Everyone always bring us the ';socialization'; issue...don't worry about it. After finding all the resources available to HSers in your area, the problem with socialization is that you find yourself needing to make sure you have time to stay home to get the schoolwork done! We have a great playgroup that we meet with on a weekly basis and the kids have fun with each other. Then there's the weekly HS class at the Y. Homeschooled kids are usually great about playing with kids who are not always the same age and also about being able to socialize with adults. Think about it, when you get in the ';real world'; are you only interacting with people in your age group?

Edit #2: For those mentioning playing with friends as being a good reason to go to public school: I thought school was supposed to be for education, not for playtime. If you don't know anything about HSing why answer this question...I wouldn't answer a ? about sending kids to public school nor tell someone they shouldn't if that's what they wanted to do.

Edit #3: You're right, the expense depends on what you choose. There should be books at your local library that explain some of the different approaches to HSing. If there's a HS bookstore in your area you can look around at the different curriculum to get an idea of what might work for you and your kids.
why home schooling? how will they learn to socialize? Were you home schooled? If you were not, did you enjoy going to school and making friends? Did you enjoy playing with your friends? Why would you take that away from your children?
You do send your children to school

but if you want homeschooling too

you can drop a line to me

as our organisation runs homeschooling as per the needs and requirements of people world wide

with certifications as wel

Home schooling, unless you are a qualified teacher, is going

to hold your children back.

Can you answer the following:

What is a finitely presented group?

What was the long term impact of the Treaty of Versailles?

What role did Camus play in the development of the modern novel?

Explain the Human Genome?

What is wrong with the following:

I feel badly for you.

What role did Senator Joseph McCarthy play in the

early days of the Cold War?

Who is Gauss?

---------------------------

All of the above are of varying degrees of difficulty.

But most, if not all, home schoolers could not answer

these questions.

Do you want your children to go to a good college and be able to compete in a work force in the future?

The United States is graduating about 600 engineers a year.

The Chinese say they are graduating 60,000 + a year.

Even if their figures are inflated, there are more graduating

than in the US. This is also true for master's and Ph.D. degrees.

And there are not enough jobs for them in China.

So, where do you think they will look for work?

Do you want your children to have greater job opportunities? Do you want your children to succeed

in a global economy?

Or do you want them to be service workers?
Homeschooling is definitely the wrong way to go. Your children won't meet any new friends and they will be socially underdeveloped. Send them to public school!

Need advice on choosing a Ford or Mazda that is good on gas mileage?

What are Ford and Mazda cars (model years 2000 and up) that are smaller/good on gas mileage? Trying to find a mom car!Need advice on choosing a Ford or Mazda that is good on gas mileage?
No brainer if you are looking for a Ford-- get the Escape Hybrid. 32mpg, works well as a mom-car.

The best thing about the 2008 Escape Hybrid is that it qualifies for a whopping $3000 Federal Tax Credit, which means you don't have to own it for years to recoup the cost of the hybrid system over a regular Escape in gas savings. The Federal tax rebate makes it cost the same as a comparably-equipped regular Escape.

I love how the advanced technology in the Escape Hybrid makes it cost less than than normal cars to maintain:

- Escape Hybrid uses regenerative braking so it does not need a brake job until 100,000 miles. (try that in a regular car!)

- Escape Hybrid uses a transmission with just a single fixed gearset-- No gear-shifting wear-and-tear of a normal car. It has no clutch, torque converter or CVT belts to wear out.

- Escape Hybrid has no starter, alternator or timing belt to wear out.

- Escape Hybrid has an 8-year / 100,000 mile warranty on its hybrid battery. If it fails before then (virtually unheard-of), Ford replaces it for free. Don't let anyone scare you with myths about how expensive it is to replace a hybrid battery because it's a non-issue.

It's a great choice in this day and age of ridiculous gas prices.

The Mazda Tribute Hybrid by the way is a rebadged Ford Escape Hybrid. You can go that route too.Need advice on choosing a Ford or Mazda that is good on gas mileage?
Get a Mazda. Much more reliable. Almost as good as Honda and Toyota. Great interior quality and looks. Sporty rides and fun to drive.

Moms do not like sporty rides. They prefer comfort and luxury.

The only luxury comfortable Mazda is the Mazda Millenia, which was made in 2000.
Check consumer report on the frequency of repairs. Honda, Toyota, and Subaru are 1,2, and 3. They may be a bit more expensive but the resale value more than makes up for it...good luck to you!

Any advice on getting my boys to sleep all through the night?

They generally do very well but sometimes they wake about around 2 or 3 and want to stay up. I try not to stimulate them so that they will fall right back asleep. Any suggestions?

Oh they are 11 1/2 months old. Any advice on getting my boys to sleep all through the night?
let them cry for a few minute more each time you go in the the next night will be easier and so on and so forth like let them cry for 15 minutes and if they dont go back to sleep go in dont pick them up but let them know your there for themhold his hand or give him some pats then leave the next time stay out for 20 minute do the same thing then for 25 minutes till they sleep he is old enough now to to understand that your not going to stay up and its night time the next day no naps so they are exhasted by bedtime comes around then they should pass out for the night Any advice on getting my boys to sleep all through the night?
Herb filled pillow would help them: Due to hectic lifestyle and stress, insomnia has become global epidemic. If left untreated, insomnia can have adverse effect on your health. There has been a steep rise in the number of accidents when the driver has drifted off to sleep while driving. Though there are many medications in the market, using the herb-filled pillow is the safest option.

Once Lauren tested her pillow successfully, she started displaying her product in trade exhibition. Her product caught the fancy of the visitors and she successfully booked orders for more than 100 pillows. When these buyers put these pillows on display in their shops, all the pillows were sold out quickly.

I have to write a booklet on how to survive being in middle and high school. What advice would you give to the students entering middle school.

And the ones entering high school?

I have already written part of it. I just want to know your advice on what should ESE kids know

before entering middle and high school. What advice would you give to ESE students entering middle school or entering high school?
Just be yourself. Nobody likes posers, and try to make friends with everyone. If your fat be funny or be tough. Also have fun!

What advice can you give me to help me with an unfriendly cat?

I've got a male cat, a few years old (neither a kitten nor an old cat). He has never purred, never sought out people, barely tolerates any affection (even if I'm very gentle and slow about it), and he has a nasty habit of peeing on the carpet.

He's spent his life living with me and several dogs (all cat-friendly) and a few cats (none of whom have a problem with humans).

I've had cats for the past 25 years or so, and never had a problem with cats. I respect them and they've been very affectionate with me.

This is the only cat I've had that refuses to warm up to people, and sometimes refuses to use a clean litter box.

If I take him to the pound, they'll kill him (he is not going to be friendly with those who might adopt him). Abandoning him is out of the question and putting him down is not an option.

I could really use some good advice on how to help him adjust to the fact that I own the place, I won't let him pee wherever, and I want to be his friend.

feed itWhat advice can you give me to help me with an unfriendly cat?
get rid of his goofy butt, some cats just have no hope...you wont miss him...just take him to a park 100 miles away, and set him free
At first I thought he was near feral, but if you've had him forever, he may just be lacking attention. If the other pets ask for more attention from you, they'll get it. This little guy just doesn't know how. He doesn't really understand the concept of affection, so he's happy enough. As to the peeing, get a toy water pistol and when you see even THINKING about it, shoot him. I won't take very long for him to get the idea.

    -MM
Yes. Get a large crate, one he can see through. Put in his litter box, food and water. Give him a bed. Put the crate in the middle of the room where there is the most activitiy.

The only time he should get freedom is after you snuggle and play with him. He will soon look forward to your attention. Either this is his personality and he will not change, or he is in cotrol. You need to take away his control.
Perhaps you need to cooperate with him too. This is a two way street, that is if you want a cat.
Your cat must be related to mine. Ive got one just like that, but its a female. It sounds like yours needs fixed, if hes peeing on the floor. Try changing liters. I would also force him to be held more. MAKE him social.

My hubby says try this...Everyday, get a little Salmon or Tuna on a plate, Just for HIM, (you and him, one on one), around the same time of day, everyday, and see if he starts warming up to you. Eventually he will let you know, thats its that time of day, for you and him ... to have his Tuna or Salmon.

We have done this, and our cats let us know, everyday, what time it is...lol....and our female has lightened up a bit. Shes beginning to get better, but dang...shes a different one...just like yours. Good luck. I hope yours decides to come around. If you do get rid of him, Id take him to the Humane Society.
Use Google to find out about books written by Gwen Bailey (or Baily?) This is a cats-expert who answers many questions on cat's behaviour. Very interesting and maybe helpful for you.
i've got a problem very similar with my cat, but it's a she. Is your male fixed? if he is, his problem may be the CLEAN litter box. but about the meaness, just let him be, some cats are just like that. I know mine is, and because she's the way she is, she's four-paw declawed. You may just have to accept that he is a loner and not an affectionate cat. There are people and dogs the same way.

What advice and input would you offer President Obama as he enters what will be the toughest 4 yrs of his life?

Personally, I wish him well, good health, and protection from the anger of the world around him. I hope that he is gifted with insight and knowledge that will bring peace to America, both from within our borders and outside them, as well.

I hope and pray that he is given the strength to study any given situation that may beset him and choose the best option. I agree with you. I did not vote for him either nor can I stand his plans and policies that he campaigned for. BUT, I will put that aside and hope he does the best he can. My personal advice for him would be to seal the borders, do not gut the military, dont let my brothers and sisters who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan die in vain by pulling out, lets do it right. Forget about the myth of global warming, find and develop a way to use our most natural resource, coal, into cars buy not depending on foreign oil, continue to support Israel and most of all, love this country like you love your kids. To stop the campaign slogans and actually do the job.
    AMEN to that
I wonder if you prayed the same ';prayer'; for the other presidents, especially President Bush. If not what a joke!

What advice do you have for an 11 year old who wants to be a pastry chef when older?

I am 11 and I love cooking so I would like to be a chef when I get older.I love to bake especially.I once baked and decorated a cake and got over 100 dolars for it.What advice do you have for an 11 year old who wants to be a pastry chef when older?
I have done this for a living and found it to be fun and exciting to do. There is so much to learn that you will never be bored. Just the idea of sharing my talent for others to benefit has inspired me. I actually consider myself an artist because I cake decorate, and it seems to have helped me with my oil painting.

So I would suggest looking on line at French Pastries,French Bakeries, schools that teach pastry arts, then visit bakeries, and talk to other chefs at restaurants, eat their desserts, and the more time you can spend making desserts at home the better, just to get your feet wet. Take a Wilton Cake decorating course at Michael's if you have one near you.Congratulations on your 100 dollar cake, there is a future for you.. Good Luck! What advice do you have for an 11 year old who wants to be a pastry chef when older?
Dear Kid: BRAVO! It is uncommon to have that sense of direction in life at that early age. In addition to some of the excellent recommendations already presented, I suggest you contacting some of the best restaurants in town and making an appointment with their Chef, kitchen staff. Do not be afraid to solicit their input...they will provide you good ideas, pointers for areas you need to consider and MAY provide you with intership opportunities when the time come.

Please keep your energy and enthusiasm...love to visit your restaurant in the not so distant figure. God bless.
Thats great you should continue to read cookbooks (even the ones from the library are good) and watch cooking shows on TV and ask your teachers what you should do school wise to become one professionally.
That is awsome for you! You keep your dream. Do well in school and take home ec classes and talk to your guidance counselor and parents about taking coursework through your local tech school like boces or We-Mo-Co... they often offer baking or cooking classes that you can take.

    Just keep up your dreams!
That sounds great, keep doing what you love because you never know where you'll be when you grow up. If you're still passionate about this after you finish high school maybe you can go to a cooking school and pursue a cooking career!
Go to a culinary (cooking/baking) school for college. Go for your dream, %26amp; don't let anyone stop u. Keep on baking! I wanna try ur food one day.
Keep doing what your doing. You should cook as much as possible. Try new recipes and experiement around in the kitchen. It will help you learn for yourself what works and what dosen't.

It might sound kind of dumb but you should Practice designing and art because those skills will help you to decorate, and be more creative when your baking and decorating.

    Have fun!
Keep doing what you are doing, you are obviosly doing it right!
Sounds to me you are being raised well. Good luck little chef.
Honestly, it's not a bad career. Keep practicing and get an internship at a bakery.... have your parents or teacher or someone to find you a good contact. In that industry, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up... even if that means dish washing...

Look into the colleges that are good for it... The Art Institute is the best... Thats where my husband went... now he's making decent money.

Good Luck... dont forget to be a kid.... once your an adult.. the fun goes away
Go for it that may be you calling in life. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!1
if that is what you love to do than I suggest you go with it

and remember to always try to get a career in what you like to do and are talented at don't just take a career just for the money
Save every nickel you can! When your old enough find jobs to earn money and save for your own bakery!
Save you money and go to Vienna Austria. They have the best pastry in the world there, better even than French or Danish.

When you are done let me know where they sell your stuff and I'll come and buy it!
Well you can start now! You can make cooking your hobby and develop your skills delighting your family at the same time! Don't be afraid to do what you dream about! You can go to a cooking school (maybe somewhere in Europe) and make a great career! The world if for those who take it! Remember that good pastry chefs are respected like artist (because, in fact they are some kind of artists).
Keep up the good work! Practice makes perfect and the more experience you have, definitly looks good on a resume!
I don't know but I want to be one too!!!
That is wonderful! First, don't neglect chemistry in school! Keep up your regular school work and become involved in different clubs (if you're not already)-such as Cooperative Extension (4-H) or other community based cooking/baking oriented organizations geared toward kids. Have a relative or a good friend help you out. Aim high! Think about France or other colleges http://www.cookingschools.com/cgi-bin/sc鈥?/a> and continue working part-time on your skills-experience is a must.

    Chez Lucy
    GO FOR IT!

stay in school and then go to a culinary school.

in a couple of years find a job in a bakery to get your experience.

in the meantime if you can make $100 a cake...go right ahead..there's nothing wrong with that.

start to read few books quick, learn buzz word in financing and start to develop network in the finance. Most people get into the field, they may have little or to nothing in the finance, but they put their interest to the heart and convince themselves that they can do it.

Believe in yourself and it should be fine. Don't rest until you become the best.

  • What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into mountain biking?

I want to get into mountain biking. I have always rode atv but I want to get myself into better shape now. I need advice on getting started with a bike and what gear I should buy also. I don't want to spend a fortune on a bike (preferably $350 or less until I get started for awhile). I will mainly be doing all offroad and trail riding. What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into mountain biking?
Like it was stated in a couple of previous answers, stay away from the Wal-mart type bikes. I have learned the hard way my self, you get what you pay for when it comes to mountain bikes.

If you could bump up what you want to pay for a bike just a little bit, you could probably find yourself a decent hard tail to get started out on to see if you going to like it.

Definitely get a helmet, I know they have saved my butt a few times, or should I say my skull.

A good pair of gloves is very important also, especially if you are on a longer ride. Comfort is important.

If you going to run flat pedals, you might want to consider getting shin guards. I am speaking from experience. If you are running clip-less pedals they might not be such a big issue.

Last but not least as a bonus, get a bike computer, it is cool to keep track of you miles and times. Seeing improvement makes you want to get back out there.

I left a couple of links of some web sites just so you can check out what is available, and maybe you can find one like it used.

**** luck with it!What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into mountain biking?
Don't go to wallmart or a department shop. Most likely they will not know which size frame would fit you and to adjust it properly, and provide lousy post sale service.

At 350, there are some hardtails you can get that are good for starters and can provide you with lots of fun.

But, go to a bike shop, and see for how a bike fits. Don't buy a full suspension bike at that price, but a hardtails that fits fine.

You will need a helmet, a spare tube and tire levers, gloves (probably you could use the ones you use for ATV, I'd give it a try), and some glases or googles (again, probably you already have some from the ATV, you could give them a try). A hydration back pack is a good idea, you could carry 2 or 3 lts of water, your spare tube, tools and a snack in there.

Some bike shops organize group rides or offer begginer clinics, which are a great way to learn to ride and meet other riders that are starting or at a similar level.
Stay AWAY from Walmart, Target, K-Mart, or any store like that. Go to a local bike shop and see what they have. That way you'll get a decent entry level mountain bike that is put together correctly.
Whether you buy from Wal Mart, Craig's List or bike shop find what size fits. Mountain bikes should be smaller than a road bike. I'm 5' 8'; and ride a 16.5'; MTB frame. I see lots of people riding mountain bikes much too big for them. Also, stick with a hard tail there is limited use for a dual suspension bike, they are heavier and cost more for a good one. A light and nimble bike will get you through the trail with less effort and with more fun.
I love mountain biking, but my advice is to get into road biking. My theory on bikes is have one of every kind, but I am most assuredly a biased roadie.
Go to Walmart (being a Brit, we dont have them!, but we have a similar counterpart) - buy a bike for your budget and give it a go!

Get a helmet if you want but better advice is to get a set of decent gloves!

    And have fun!

By the way Bob, Nobody would guess your biased towards road bikes, mate!

EDIT: forget what the know-alls say - buy a cheap bike (even if it lasts just a year) and see how you get on with it, by the years end, - you will have spoken to enough fellow riders and picked up enough experience to decide how far you want to go, when it comes to buying a bike!)

    Trust me!!

    .
Most bike shops usually have a few used bikes around that will be in your price range. Avoid the box store brands. Good components with a few seasons of wear will far outperform shiny new garbage. There's not much you need other than a bike, a helmet, and a decent pair of bike shorts. Clipless pedals are great, but I would recommend learning how the bike handles without them first. You'll also want some basic tools for repairs and adjustments; a folding allen wrench set, air pump, tire levers, and patch kit.
    1. All mtn bikers wear helmets.

    2. Make sure your brakes work and now how to use them.

%26gt;2a. Buy a Mtn bike Skills book; the one by Brian Lopes is excellent

    3. The specialized Hardrock is a great starter bike and its in your price range.

    4. Bikeshorts are necessary.

    5. A good set of full-fingered gloves (at least $15 or more)

    6. Flat bottomed tennis shoes; no need for hikers or boots.

    7. Start out slow and build your skill set one at a time...start with wheelies after you learn how to brake properly.

    8. Lower your seatpost from the normal sidewalk/street height so you can get your weight back as you need.

    9. Learn to drive your bike....riding is for horses.

    10. Its a freakin blast..I hope you get hooked like me.
Go tot he local bike shop and ask what they have from people trading up. This way you will get more for the money as it is hard to get a mountain bike that will last for that kind of money. Don't ride without a helmet, and although you are ATV experienced, you should go to the local trail with people that are familiar with the terrain. You want the easy trail (try a ';rails to trails'; system first to get used to pedaling). There is a HUGE difference when you have to power over the obstacles yourself. Finally, have fun!

PS. the golden rule- don't look at the obstacle you want to avoid or else you are sure to hit it.
not sure if this was already mentioned, but

    buy the right frame size...

    measure your inseam.

wouldnt want to rack 'the boys' lol

i'm new to mtb as well, got a nice entry level bike

    off craigslist!
check what your bike shop has

if they sell giant bikes, get a giant boulder

if they sell specialized bikes, get a specialized hardrock

if they sell diamondback bikes, get a diamondback response sport

What advice would you give to young people about relationships?

And what would you say to young people of your own gender on that matter? What advice would you give to young people about relationships?
The following applies to all sexes and preferences:

Be honest. Be fair. Be considerate (literally- consider the other before you act).

    When arguing (you will argue):

    Choose your battles wisely.

never attack the person, attack the behavior.

Be willing to admit you are wrong (even when your not)

Be willing to change to accommodate your lover/partner.

Give each other space and alone time. If you are both allowed to explore the world you will find new things to bring to your relationship and continually be able to keep it fresh.

Never ever tolerate any form of abuse as a trade off for intimacy. What advice would you give to young people about relationships?
Honor your father and your mother so that their days upon the earth will be long and filled with happiness. Love thy neighbor as thyself. When you take a woman to be your life long mate and you vow to God in front of his Holy Alter that you will love and honor her for the rest of your life and that death will be the only condition that will separate you, you have made a pack with God that you will never break. Do not ever make a commitment to another person unless you are certain that you can and will honor it.
To many young people look at a long term relationship like a light friendship. If it doesn't work out, they can get a divorce and try again. This is one reason the divorce rate is so high. Another is the living together without marrying, they can leave with no ill feelings.

When I was young a relationship was forever and when you decided to get married, you married for life. You tried to make the best of it and tried to do the best you could, not run to a lawyer right away because one partner said something you didn't like.
Always remember that the person that you worship and adore when you fall in love is as human as you are.

They are going to make mistakes.

They are going to say the wrong thing at the wrong time.

They are not going to say anything when they should be speaking to you.

Before you get in their face ..... look in the mirror at your own.

Are you without ownership in the problem?

    Always use compassion before confrontation.

The compliment will be returned and you will be more than grateful.
Follow your gut instincts. If you feel it's right it probably is. if you feel, hey, this isn't right, then it probably isn't.

Treat yourself and your mate with respect.

Be a good listener. Really hear what the other person is saying.

Realize that even the strongest person has fears and insecurities.

    Be a good friend.
To slow down and be in no hurry to settle down and remember if you both don't give 100% to the relationship it will never work or be happy Ive been married 40 years and it took 20 years for my hubby to realize we were on the same team, we are very happy now but it would have easier if he realized it sooner.
';look before you leap'; (don't rush)

';if at first you don't succeed , try , try and try again';(don't give up to easy)

';what's good enough for the goose is good enough for the gander';(equality)

    i do not believe ';you've made your bed, now lie in it'; i say ';re make it till it's right ';

    ..and my favourite:

';life is a bed of roses, but watch out for the pricks'; :)
Keep the lines of communication open

Don't keep secerts from each other

Don't lie to each other no matter how angry you think the other will be

Be mindful of each others feelings at all time's

    Be good to each other.

Tell your partner at least once a day how much you love them
The well-maintained relationship percolates in to the heart. We can experience divinity when we keep the relationship with friends, brothers, sisters, parents etc. Love is noble. Give love, take love. Maintain good relationship with cultured people
If the guy who leaves his dirty socks and underwear under your bed is a true friend who makes you laugh, just throw his socks and shorts in the hamper. It only takes a minute.
Like the song says...';You Better Shop Around';!!!
Have a lot of them and with as large a variety of people as possible! Variety is the spice of life!
I would tell them to try everything before bailing.
Only date people you think you could see yourself married to. Cupid could enter the picture at any time.
Don't rush into anything. And you must like the smell of the person as well as their personality.

    If they don't have a twinkle in their eye and you don't have one for them then RUN AWAY%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

Need advice on how to make a cookbook?

I have people asking me all of the time for my recipes. So I have decided that I want to make a cookbook for my family, friends and the kids teachers. I am going to use it as christmas presents and get a head start on them. I need some information though on how to go about making one. Ideas as far as what kind of book would I put them in, what categories to include, any information would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance.Need advice on how to make a cookbook?
There are many ways to approach your task, one way is by time of day, chapters, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Snacks which really like myself. The other is in menu form, select the Entree, Meat, Chicken, Fish, Pasta and then have a referenced Pairings chapter for what are great combo's for the selection (sides). Tweek your recipes to how you'd make them youself in your kitchen with what you have on hand as normal staples, lemon zest instead of lemongrass, etc. Get yourself a Digital camera and start taking pics of your creations as you're in the process of writing your book, remember we eat with our eyes also, I picture is worth it's weight in gold. I wish the best, keep me in mind when Christmas rolls around.Need advice on how to make a cookbook?
First an outline. Decide the slant you will give to the book, how are going to present it, and include and prepare the list of recipes.

Will it be a book with only pasta recipes, only desserts, a book on salads or will it be ';My 101 best recipes'; with a bit of everything?

If you want the book only for the family, just list your 101 best recipes in alphabetical order.

There is recipe management software that can help you organize, format and publish all those recipes, a selection of software can be found at:

    http://www.all-foods-natural.com/bazaar/鈥?/a>

I hope you open your cookbook to the general public.
I'd browse through a cook-book you own and take a look at the categories (Usually they go something like Appetizer/Beverages, Salads/Side dishes, Main Dishes, Deserts). You can break it down much further (under main dishes list by beef, vegetarian, pork, chicken, etc.) or just leave the categories very general (it probably depends on how many recipes you are including--you don't want just one or two recipes in each section) Then I'd get all your recipes together and decide which ones go in each category.

As for book ideas, you could print them up and put them in a ring binder type of book, or if you have a local printing press they may be able to do a small run for you, just check your phone book for listings.

You could also set your printer to print 3x5 or 4x6 cards, buy card stock, print several recipes to a page, cut them out and put them in recipe boxes (my mom did that one year for me for Christmas so I'd have all my favorite recipes from when I was growing up when I got married). You could even vary the card stock colors depending on the category of recipe (main dishes blue, appetizers red, etc.)

First off, probably some form of self publishing software. As for the book itself, I would categorize it like a menu! Start with appetizers and end it with desserts filling in all the blanks inbetween! Such as soups, salads, ala carte, dinner, etc!

What advice do you have for a pregnant teenager who is keeping her child?

I want to know if there's any special things a pregnant teenager should do (besides going to the doctor) and are there any special schools where pregnant teens can go?What advice do you have for a pregnant teenager who is keeping her child?
I'm not sure about where you live but around here we have alternative high schools or independent study where you go a couple days a week instead of every day. Make sure you take you prenatal vitamins and get a lot of sleep. Also drink lots of water it helps with headaches and cramping that comes along the way. What advice do you have for a pregnant teenager who is keeping her child?
Thats exactly where I found myself at your age. I am in the process of getting a support site up and running for teen moms, feel free to look at it, and hopefully there will be lots of other teen moms there to talk to very soon. www.teenpregnancysupport.webs.鈥?

There are some programs for pregnant teens in order to finish high school (which you should try to do!) Ask in your school district. You should also try to find some parenting classes, that would help. Stick with you family, your going to need their support through everything. Good luck!
Most cities have an ';alternative'; school for out of place teens. By meaning out of place, teens that are pregnant, have difficult in regular schools, have had issues with substance abuse. Talk to your school counselor about it. There might be one in your area.
Just make sure you do all the right things by your baby and you. Good luck with it all i had my son when i was 16. Best thing that happens to you enjoy ur little bundle of joy.
Im sure there are schools for pregnant teens. How old are you? This would help a lot in telling you what do to.

Any advice on frosting a cake?

I'll be making a bunny cake which will involve cutting into shape before frosting. I recall that when I did this several years ago I had a problem frosting along the cut parts... the cake would crumble and mix with the frosting. Any suggestions on how to minimize or totally avoid this? Thanks!Any advice on frosting a cake?
Try sticking the cake in the freezer for a few minutes before icing. My mom does that and it seems to keep the crumbs from getting in the icing so much.

I also saw on Food Network where a bakery puts on a ';base'; layer of very thin icing and sticks the cake in the freezer for a bit, so they're frosting ontop of a hard layer of icing already.Any advice on frosting a cake?
Frost avery thin layer and let it set for about an hour. Then Frost a thicker layer on top. It will come out perfect.
Professional bakers put on a ';crumb coat'; of icing. This is a very thin layer of icing designed to catch the crumbs and hold them in the thin layer of icing. Let it dry a couple hours.

Then go back w/ your t hick, pretty coat of icing (spread or piped on) and the crumbs should stay stuck in the ';crumb coating.'; Just dont' try to spread the icing too far; be generous w/ it.
If time permits, the best way to prepare a homemade cake for frosting is to freeze it for a couple of hours or overnight. (You can freeze undecorated cake layers for up to a month before using.) Freezing tightens the cake's crumb (texture), making it an easier surface to frost on and prevents a lot of crumbs from forming
Do something called a crumb coat. Make sure the cake is thoroughly cooled (actually putting it in the refrigerator beforehand is a great idea). Take a pastry brush and brush off excess crumbs then put a thin layer of frosting over the pieces and let it air dry then go ahead and frost it after that process. You should not have any crumbs when you frost it the second time as they will basically have been sealed in by the crumb coat.
make sure th cake is completely cool and frosting is at room temperature...
You frost the cake twice, by that I mean, first you put on a very, very thin layer, called the crumb coat, this locks in all those nasty crumbs. then put in the fridge to harden, then after about a half an hour, frost again , when you are done, dip the knife in hot water to smooth out any big peaks, this is how the pros do it.....I have been frosting cakes for over 35 years.......good luck...

Any advice on planting a pumpkin patch?

I'm planning on putting in a pumpkin and gourd patch in my backyard. Any suggestions as to size, type of pumpkin seed and when to plant? I've ready conflicting articles on all of these. Yes I do know that they won't be ready for Halloween.Any advice on planting a pumpkin patch?
The answer really depends on how big you want your patch to be. When you begin to grow your patch use unroasted seeds(lol i couldn't resist) plant 3 or 4 seeds every 6 or so inches about 3 inches under the dirt water and wait. Now as far as when the best time to begin your patch is in June. This gives the patch time to become established prior to the ';dog days'; when the temperatures get really high. Either way you need to water regularly if you want to have a nice patch. The seed that I would suggest for your patch is whatever you pull out of your pumpkins this October. I once through a handfull of these into a compost pile and the next year had a huge patch. Not that I wanted them but I got them---- :) As for Gourds, well I would assume the same process being that Pumpkins are Gourds... Good luck with your patch and be nice to the Great PUMPKIN Charlie BrownAny advice on planting a pumpkin patch?
First off, keep the pumpkins away from everything else. Once they start growing not only will they need space but they will spread season after season. You should see sprouts in about ten days, if not try a different batch of seeds. Hit your local feed store for information about which pumpkins and gourds to plant and when the best time to start them for your area. Hills are best because they'll be able to get enough sunlight as well as good drainage, you don't want the bottoms to rot out on you.
You did not say where you live, but that is a really important consideration. Even the smaller pumpkins and gourds will require a growing season of 3 months or more, and they will want warm weather for optimal growth. In most of the United States, there is virtually no chance for pumpkins or gourds planted today to reach maturity before the colder weather sets in. So unless you live in a climate where it is warm all year, you should wait until next spring when the weather is reliably warm, which is May - early June in much of the country. I live in northern California, in a milder coastal region, and even though we don't get snow or many hard frosts, there is no way that a newly planted gourd or pumpkin would produce anything before cold weather kills it.

As far as size and type, get some seed catalogs and read up on it. Seed catalogs are excellent sources of information on how to germinate the seeds, how much room the plants need to grow, and how best to tend the plants. Some good ones which also have online catalogs are Thompson %26amp; Morgan, Park Seed, Stokes Seeds, and Burpee Seed Co.

So unless you live somewhere semi-tropical, the best things you can do right now are to research what types of pumpkins and gourds you wish to grow next year, and to improve the soil where your pumpkins and gourds will be growing. Also give some thought to how you will trellis your gourds, since they will grow most efficiently if you provide a vertical support for them.

All the knowledge you gain from your research, and all the increased fertility in your garden soil as you add compost, etc., will help to insure that next year's pumpkins and gourds will be incredible.

What advice can you give for short term stock investing?

I'm not looking to become a millionaire through stocks. Just a place to get my money to earn higher interest. I'm interested in making short-term investments, as in buying and selling in a matter of months. What advice can you give me? What tools to use? Is seasonal stocks any good, etc.? Simulation tools? How exactly does short term investment work? Does it earn you more than a CD bank account? What advice can you give for short term stock investing?
Yes you can do it. Most people that try what you're doing fail (96% stop after the first year)... most of those in the first 3-6 months.

Comparing a CD to short term trading is like comparing apples to a pen.

CD's are insured by the US Gov't up to $250,000 (in USA). Short Term Trading can (and does) lead to losing 50% - 100% of all your trading money.

Success in trading is dependent upon hard work and developing a style that works for you. There is no formula. There are no short cuts.

Read some (2-4) basic books on investing..... then move on to more involved books on trading.

Don't lose site of the importance of good money management and psychology (the market... as well as yours). A good book to start in this areana is: Trading In The Zone, Mark Douglas.

In short, based on how you phrase your question.... I don't think this is a good idea for you...... (at least right now). comparing earning money on a CD to earning money on stocks..... tells me... you have a long way to go.What advice can you give for short term stock investing?
There's only 2 ways to make money in the stock market:

    1. Buy low, sell high (eg. Apple Computers)

    2. Buy shares in a financially strong company and continue to hold the stock ongoing to make a return on investment through quarterly dividends. (eg Coca Cola)

If you want to do short-term investing you have to choose the first method which is hard work. You need charts, to see what the share price is doing and whether the stock is trending. I would recommend Meta Stock software for this: http://www.equis.com

I think the second long-term method is much easier. You can find good books about dividend investing at http://www.amazon.com
My advice to anyone who seriously wants to make money trading stocks short-term is ';don't do it!';... If your time horizon is ';a couple of months';, then you are NOT investing, you are trading....which is the same as gambling.
Don't do it. It's not the right time. If you want to invest your money, buy government debt, right now it's the safest bet, but the interest isn't that high. Check the bloomberg site for info on investment.

Many great business were started by people who had nothing more than common sense. If you use that everything else will fall into place. Try and read history of Coca-cola, McDonalds, KFC, Virgin, HP, Microsoft
lower your goals. I am not sure you can create a small business that helps the WORLD in a great way. Those are usually foundations and are not made for profit. Businesses are made for profit. You need to have some sort of concept of a product or service before you get excited about a business. those skills, traits and knowledge will be related to the product or service.

Any advice on how to get motivated to do housework?

I really hate housework and have to set myself little goals to get any done. Any secrets or hints that anyone can offer.Any advice on how to get motivated to do housework?
Put on loud music that you enjoy

Tell yourself you'll just clean until the album is over...

Tell yourself you'll just do this one room

Do just half an hour a day so you don't have to do it all at once

Use cleaning products you like (good smelling stuff helps)

Promise yourself a treat when you're done

Break it down into small goals as you go

I like to put essential oils in the vacuum so that the air smells good as I vacuum

Invite someone over and just work on getting the place looking good for them...Any advice on how to get motivated to do housework?
Put on some really good music and turn everything else in the entire house off that may distract you.
Challenge yourself, think that if your friends are coming over and they will be disgusted about your messy house. Or think ';clean';.
Since I was a kid I have always played FLEETWOOD MACS Rumors. I also hate having anyone home while I'm cleaning. Then I sit back, light a candle, relax and admire the clean house.
Buy a couple of new and exciting cleaning products! I just love that aisle in the grocery store.
    Good beaty music really loud!

%26amp; a reward like if you vaccum the house from top to bottom you get to eat the family sized bar of chocolate!

(Then vaccum some more to burn off the calories!!)
A caffeine drink wouldnt hurt! But, just focus on the outcome and donate or get rid of clutter! You will feel better without all of the dust and clutter! Trust me!
Well, best way to motivate yourself is to start enjoying house work. I mean if you start liking clean orderly place to live - you will start enjoying creating such a place. I used to hate cooking, but later realised I like certain tastes and best way to have it is to cook my own. Now it is a hobby!!!!! Good luck
Start on the hardest job first. If it is dishes do them first. Then you wont be dreading doing the hard work. ONce you finish the hard stuff its easier to keep going because everything is easy and can be done viewed as manageable and quick and easy to clean up. I find once I get started my cleaning I want to finish and get annoyed when distracted from it at times. Though another thing that helps is resting for about ten minutes or so after you finish a job...do dishes rest w/coffee whatever, vacume floors rest, do laundry rest....it is so that i dont mind cleaning and if i cant stand to finish it at least ive done the major stuff and the minor can wait for another day.

What advice would you give to someone who is feeling hopeless?

I sometimes feel like I'm lacking hope and sometimes, I am facing friends or family who appear to be lacking hope. Is there anything, that can be said? If someone is in chronic pain, what can you do to help? If someone has lost someone, what can you say? I never know what to do/say and just say, ';it'll be ok';.What advice would you give to someone who is feeling hopeless?
Just let them know that you are there for them. It's tough to deal with people with chronic pain because often times going through their story of the pain and how it affects them can be very hard. I found it easier for me if people asked less about my pain because when I think about my pain it gets worse. The people that helped me the most were the ones who were there for me when I needed them but then treated me like I was normal when I didn't want to talk about my pain. What advice would you give to someone who is feeling hopeless?
Well growing up in foster care i was in that place alot everyday someone was hurt and everyday so was i all i can say is when someone is feeling hopeless find all the positive stuff you can and bring it out let them know you will always be there for them and cry alittle it helps. for people with all kinds of problems like i said if there sad find something to make them smile and when your feeling down think of what tomorrow can bring think of your future and how beautiful it can be think of all the good never the bad cast all the bad away and you should be fine.

and one last thing when ever helping someone going threw a hard time find something to do to take there mind off of it see a movie go to the beach or to eat.
If it is a person in despair, then I would advise eating certain foods high in B12, B5, B6 or B3. Warm milk, cheese on toast, are perhaps the best remedy as both contain B12 and B3.

Getting a good nights sleep is imperative for this person. A warm bath will help this process, and some soft soothing music and dimmed lights. Nothing too demanding for the mind (no TV, or difficult mental routines).

As to what to say, perhaps offer to make the person a cup of hot milk with or without cocoa/decaffeinated coffee.

Then just listen to what they have to say, if they say anything. Do not try to solve the problem, just show them that you are listening by confirming your understanding of what they are saying.

If they ask you what you would do, then tell them you'd sleep on it. Everything will seem different when you wake up to a new day. Hope rises in the morning, and sets in the evening.

Get outside the next day in the sunshine. Do some physical exercise, and most of all eat a healthy and a well balanced diet.

Look on Amazon for a book called 'The power of Now', it's helped me through some difficult times and I highly recommend it. There's a link below.

What's the worst or funniest piece of advice you have ever received regarding horses?

What's the worst or funniest piece of advice you have ever received from a trainer, another student, or a non horsey person? Please include all three if you can and any one else who has given you bad or funny bits of advice when it comes to horses. I thought this might be rather interesting to hear from everybody. What's the worst or funniest piece of advice you have ever received regarding horses?
non-horsey person: ';horse back riding isn't a sport. and you don't have to do any work, so you should find something else to do.'; *rolls eyes*

another student: ';you need to hold your reins tighter.'; (which is funny, coming from someone on an english saddle who rides at a primarily western stable, meaning, she should know better by now. western reins are supposed to have more slack than english reins cause you neck rein)

trainer[the funniest]: ';be careful! you have to sneak up really slowly and throw the lead rope over her neck or she'll get away!';(advice from a trainer, not mine, after she attempted to catch my mare to no avail, after trying for about 15 minutes. i then proceeded to say something to my horse, and she walked directly up to me and put her nose in the halter)What's the worst or funniest piece of advice you have ever received regarding horses?
I have some worst ones. A western ';trainer'; who told me you need to put a horse into a curb (leverage) bit before you can teach collection.

I was working on leg yields (two tracking) in the arena once when a student there for a lesson came over to me and told me I needed to get some spurs and work into the wall so I could get my horse to side pass correctly. That one is as funny as it is worst, I guess.

Most of what non-horse people say is either funny just ill informed...I can't think of a worst or funniest offhand.
Worst- to make your horse more collected and get a slower job/lope for western, tie cement blocks to their hind legs and have them drag them around. The added weight will train them to go slower.

Worst part of it? The person who told me this regularly uses the practice. I am really, really surprised one of her horses haven't broken their legs yet.

Another favorite of mine is that if you ever discipline your horse, it will hate you, and never let you near it. Woman who told me that had the most unmanagable horse ever :)
A man who told every one he was a trainer informed us that ';horses can't live anywhere there's been cows';. Perhaps one of the most ignorant things i've ever heard.

One that doesn't bother me because it was a well meaning young lady:

I had my horses picketed in a yard where we were ';camping'; in town and a girl came up to knock on the door and tell me she ';didn't think our horses should be tied up because she has horses and knows that if they spook, well that would be bad';. She wanted to help but Obviously I also have horses and I know that they tie fine and were under supervision. I ended up making them spend the night in the trailer because you never know how intense some people are. I didn't want to find a group of teenagers ';rescuing'; my horses io the dark.
My first English lesson, I was being taught by my trainer's very capable 13 y/o daughter (with him in the ring giving a more advanced lesson on the other half). He happened to look over as I was doing a sitting trot, and yelled (in his thick German accent) ';Little girl on the pony! Sit on your butt!'; That's stuck with me to this day, and it always make me laugh.

The same daughter once screamed at me to ';sit on my @$$';, which also stuck with me because she hardly ever yelled (apparently I had a recurring problem...).
I guess i don't have any advice, but it makes me laugh how non-horsey persons are completely clueless! Like how they say riding isn't a sport. One person even had the nerve to ask me if they could ride my horse, stating that they never rode before, but they were sure they could figure it out. I had to laugh at that one.
ok, when i was first learning how to ride, i was having trouble getting my horse into the canter, my parents told me to firmly say Canter! another student told me to put one arm out front parallel to his neck, and the other right out behind me, because they thought it made him feel my balance better... lol!!!!
One time my boyfriend's brother was trying to tell me how to ride my own horse. Granted, I've been riding nearly 11 years now, and he's ridden maybe one hour total throughout his life.

Needless to say, I sat him up on my horse, who promptly decided to go on a wild bucking spree. Once the brother got back up I smiled and said ';How was your free flying lessons? I hope you enjoyed the flight!'; and got him back onto my horse, and put him through a very rough 30 minute work out. The next day he was crying from sore muscles (And this guy is a firefighter).

    Something I always hear from people who don't know much about horses is ';OMG! You PULL their mane?! How could you be so cruel?!';
No one told me this, but I read that one guy wanted to teach his horse to stop rearing, so he filled a beer bottle full of ketchup, and when the horse reared, he smashed it on the horses head. He thought that the ketchup would make the horse think that it had busted its head. Horses aren't that dumb. They can smell the ketchup. I thought it was pretty stupid.
Once my trainer told me that to help my balance i hould backflip off my horse. let's just say i didn't land well.

Oh and people ho don't rode are just hilarious. I can't even tell you how many times someone has said something ridiculous to me.
English saddles ruin the conformation of a horse and give a horse sway back. (This lady is a breeder)

It's easy to ride a horse all you have to do is sit and kick while pulling on the reins for the direction you want to go.
My friend use to take lessons at a barn. One day she saw my horse laying down and told me that if he lays down for over 10 miniutes he will die. i just had to laugh. She said that was what her trainer said.
My friend told me that she was once peed on by a horse. I guess it's not advice, but it's a lesson to watch the horse at all times.
This from a non horse person: You never say sshhhh to your horse, because then the horse thinks you are a snake and will be afraid of you. LOL
My neighbor thought I was stupid or my horse being scared of my saddle pad...he thought I was putting the saddle on backwards...*cough*
The hardest thing about riding is the ground.
    'lean forward when trotting!!!!!!!!'

    LOL
To get rid of rain-rot spots use pickle juice or mouth wash. It worked. :D
I had a friend with a farm right along a busy road, and I can't tell you how many times she'd get a call that one of her horses was dead in the field. Horses do lay down to sleep sometimes! Sheesh...

When I was a kid, I got a job at a little dump of a lesson stable grooming and tacking horses up before their lessons and cleaning up afterwards. The lady who ran the barn was clearly clueless. It was so bizarre that I kept thinking I must be on Candid Camera!

First, she told me to grab saddles and put them on the horses. She said it did not matter which saddles for which horses since they all fit the same. Many of the saddles did not fit well, and tipped backwards with the pommel (front) much higher than the back of the saddle. This was due to a combination of poor saddle fit and swaybacked horses. Well, in the tack room I had seen a pile of those foam lollypop shaped riser pads that lift the back of the saddle , so I asked her if I should use them. She told me that those were only for dressage saddles and since these were huntseat or ';forward seat'; lessons the saddle was supposed to sit higher in the front.

Then, she proceeded to have all her students posting on the wrong diagonal. When I questioned her about this, she gave me some b.s. answer and ignored me. The next day she told me that she learned from a British instructor, and they post on the opposite diagonal from American riders. That was a good one...

Finally, she told me that there was one horse who I had to make sure only the advanced riders tried to ride. She said the horse was very fussy about rein contact, and if a rider pulled too hard she would toss her head violently and even rear. Well, the horse had the harshest curb bit I've ever seen (for an English riding program too!). When I asked why the horse with the most sensitive mouth had such a harsh bit, she told me that that's the bridle that came with the horse when she bought her at auction. Like I was some moron. Duh! Obviously the bridle that came in the package deal with the horse is the only one you can use. It's not like you can change the bit or anything...

Needless to say, I quit that job after only a few days.

  • What advice can people give on buying a new helmet?

I am looking to buy myself a new full-face, sports bike style motorbike helmet but am spoilt for choice when i look. What can anybody recommend when looking for a new helmet? How do you know which will perform best? and which are just not worth the money?

Any help appreciated as i am in my first year of biking so still finding my feet with whats what. What advice can people give on buying a new helmet?
The first thing to look for is a SNELL approval. Most helmet which are SNELL approved will also be DOT approved, since the SNELL approval criteria is more stringent than the DOT criteria.

Second, get a helmet that fits you properly. A loose fitting helmet will not properly protect you in an accident.

Additionally, buy the lightest helmet you can afford which meets the above criteria. The materials used in the helmets outer shell range from various plastics to fiberglass to some very lightweight exotic materials like carbon fiber. Unfortunately, the lighter materials tend to be the most expensive. The reason for opting for a lightweight helmet is to reduce the effect of whiplash in case of a crash. Your neck and spine must support the weight of your head and the helmet through some very high forces during an accident. What advice can people give on buying a new helmet?
Some good answers here already, but also worth a look at is the BMW system 3 series of helmets. Flip up front, great for when you are in town and need a better view. Also can be opened at the gas station rather than having to remove your helmet for the benefit of cameras etc. Never take mine off when filling up! The local garage Lady one day asked me to take my helmet off when i went to pay. OK I will If you Will, never asked since!

Also to consider if you are likely to get an intercom check for speaker location points inside the helmet. Removable visor makes for easier cleaning. Does it have a tinted visor option available. Set a budget and see whats on offer. Check end of range helmet flog offs, you could get a bargain. How ever if you have a thirty quid head, buy a 30 quid helmet. Typical money æ‹¢250 to æ‹¢300 for one that will work when you need it, God forbid you ever have to find out. Andy Pandy.
don't know if you are male or female - I will assume male

    1. don't spare money - buy the best you can afford. If you going on holiday to mainland Europe you will find helmets much cheaper there

    2. always make sure the fit is comfortable. when you put the helmet on see if it will move in any direction - if it does, it is too small. the fit should be snug but not uncomfortably tight

3 all helmets are approved so don't worry about the 'standard' marked on them

    4. if you can afford it go for a composite helmet, they are much stronger and safer than single material helmets, plus they will not have to be thrown away if you drop them.

5 avoid going for one with a 'sportstar' endorsement, you will only pay extra for the name

6 plain coloured helemets tnd to be much cheaper than 'designer' lids

7 NEVER buy a second hand helemet

8 Join the Motorcylcle Action group (MAG) - many retailers offer substantial discounts to MAG members

9 ride safe - ride free
Put the helmet on. grab the back of the helmet from over your head and pull as hard as you can. then push on the chin. The helmet should not be able to come off and should not make any drastic movements. try opening and closing your mouth in the helmet, doing so shouldn't be too easy. I highly recommend a helmet that is also Snell approved only because it puts the helmet through more crash like tests. Dont buy something based on its looks but make sure you are happy with the helmet. I bought a Bell Apex for $200 recently and it works wonderful for ME. do your research on each individual helmet. dont let anyone tell you what and what not to buy unless they can explain and show you why. Bell are great affordable helmets that are very safe and comfortable so dont listen to the comment not to buy one.
definately no bell or hjc, scorpion is a good choice for cheap, great feel inside and good protection, personally i look for the material inside that is going to be rubbing on your face for however long you have the helmet, plus of course the safety aspect, usually if it is dot approved or snell approved your head aint gonna crack open when you hit the ground.
best thing you can do is go into a shop with a wide range and try different brands on to start with, as people have different shaped heads and some brands will not be suitable for you, due to there shape, a good fitting helmet is the biggest must, once you find a lid than is comfortable, you can then search the web for the best price, your if like me very impulsive just buy it. arai is a good make so is shoei but shoeis's dont fit my head................
make sure it fits properly, it's dot approved, and you can easily get replacement visors or at least be able to remove it easily to clean it. if you can spare it, go for a modular helmet, you won't be sorry, mine is an hjc, the lock is a little stiff but happy with it.

my wife's skid lid came off of ebay for 1/2 of what mine was in the retailer's store
make sure they fit SNUG!!! not lose....

HJC, KBC good beginner helmets ... make sure they're DOT/SNELL approved

scorpion is still new =/ not sure how they are safety wise

so is Icon...but they're very stylish

if you want the BEST, performance helmet than go with SHOEI, ARAI, SUOMY...they've been proven to be the best on track and streets....do a little reading on their website or forums you'll see they're sponsored by most major racing companies and has been proven in many crash tests...to be the best amongst all the brands
    Make sure it fits!

A poor fitting helmet is worse than none at all.

If you buy on-line, try the same exact size and model in a store first.

DOT and Snell are both testing standards.

I don't believe either one accurately reflect real life.

DOT is required to be road legal in the States.
arai is wat my bf uses and he wont stray from that...........he's been on a bike since age of whenever he could and he races aswell so its well tested..........anyway if your not sure join a biking forum or search on line............loads of stores for bikers and ebay have a great selection also............think he got his last one online from america and that was less that 12 months ago........keep er lit and between the ditches
IT SHOULD FIT GOOD, NOT REALLY MOVE WHEN YOU SHAKE YOUR HEAD SIDE TO SIDE !

MAKE SURE IT MATCHES YOUR BIKE !!

MAKE SURE IT HAS AIR VENTS FOR COOLING YOUR HEAD.

GO FOR A GOOD NAME BRAND, EX.( ARAI, ICON, SHOEI OR OTHER GOOD ONES) THESE YOU WILL PAY ALOT MORE FOR, BUT ARE WELL WORTH IT IF YOU GO DOWN !!
    Try it on.

Full face, it has to fit, it has to have a real DOT sticker on it. It should have a ';Snell rating.'; That's it.

I don't buy black helmets. They get hot in the summer.
go to the store drop the helmits on the ground and which ever 1 looks like it would hurt the least if your head was in it be sure to get that 1
Make sure you buy one which you can get a dark visor for ,nothing worse than these clear jobs (daytime)
Buy the best one you can afford, remember you only have one head.
Make sure you can try it on for size and comfort before you buy.
Make sure it fits and make sure it is dot approved
Make sure it fits well, not too loose.

make sure it has both ';dot'; and ';snell'; certifications
dont get one of the ones with the stupid little ears on it.
I would suggest that you visit a reputable local bike shop, and ask them for advice...and try a few on!!!
Helmet? What the heck is a helmet?
    Make sure it works.
make sure its big red and ugly

What advice do you have for a first tattoo?

I am 23 and have wanted a tattoo since I was about 16. I have many ideas for what I might want, but have not put together any final designs. I have been told that for my first tat I should go pretty big. After a small tattoo I will just want more and may not be able to incorporate it into a design for a larger tat. Any truth to this? Just looking for suggestions/tips. Thanks...What advice do you have for a first tattoo?
I know exactly how you feel! I waited until I was 21 for my first tattoo when I had been flirting with the idea for years. First %26amp; foremost, you'll know when you find the right tattoo because you'll keep going back to the same image. Search tattoo shops, magazines, the internet %26amp; nature for something that captures your attention. Pick something with great meaning behind it.

I have two tattoos at this point, I do want more, but the addiction is not there for everyone. My best friend %26amp; I got our first tattoos together three years ago %26amp; she has had no desire to get another one.

I wouldn't advise you start out with a large tattoo with intricate detail. Those tattoos generally require many sessions (not to mention LOTS of money) to complete the design. Pick a small to medium singular graphic that can be easily concealed on your body. If you can endure the sensation %26amp; long for another one, go for it! Think that ink is for life. It's much more costly %26amp; painful to attempt to remove them! What advice do you have for a first tattoo?
    my advice, dont get one
Tattoos are addicting. When you decide what you want wait at least six months, and if you still want it go for it. Just make sure it is something you can live with. I have only one and it is about 8 inches long on my upper arm. People always come up to me and comment or ask about it, which gets annoying but I asked for it. Also, I am a bookkeeper and I am not allowed to show my tat at work which means I can't really wear short sleeves, which really sucks in 106 degree weather. All I can say is it is expensive, and permanent. If it is that important to you be ready to live with it for the rest of your life.
Tatoos are pretty addicting....You might still want another one even if you do go big. Just don't get something you'll regret in fifty years-make sure it's something you'll like seeing for the rest of your life.
i wouldn't get anything done until you know what you want for sure. the where will come next and you will be able to visualize better how it will look in that area and what should follow. the best advice i got about tattoo's was make it meaningful. if it's something important to you everything else about it and the following tattoo's will fall easily into place. i've only got one tat so far and it's small. i don't feel the need to incorporate anything else around it. but i have two more i'm going to get and i'm confident they will all look good. they will be completely seperate pieces but all mean alot to me and that to me is most important.
Best choice for a first tat is:

    No Tat

    Don't defile your body.
tatoos can be very addicting i dont know if there is any truth to gettin a small one you will want a bigger one.. i have 3 and they are all about the same size i would suggest to make sure that its something you want for the rest of your life.. thats the only suggestion i got for you!!
Pick something that will have long term signifigance. No names of boyfriends or some fad hobby your into. Something that 20 years from now you will still appreciate having that displayed on you. If you are unsure about having one, put it in a place where people can see it only if you want them to. I do not mean any perverted places. Just a place that normal clothing will cover. Pick a reputiable place. One that uses state approved methods. Other then that, good luck...
    get rid of it
Pass on the tattoo unless it is in a private place.
Size doesn't matter. Placement and the actual picture you want are key. If you have some ideas, then find an artist you trust and tell them what you have been thinking. They will sketch up some ideas and you can pick which one you like.
Really it is up to you to decide whatever you want and how big. Best thing to do though it probably to make sure you get something that has meaning to you.
if you want to look like a cartoon billboard go for it but i think they look like SH*T myself
If you're not sure what you want, I don't suggest getting it right away. Put in some thought, and search other people's tattoos. Once you get a design you like, go for it! As for the larger tattoo idea, I personally don't find that to be true.
My advice would be to pass on the tattoo. Do you want to hold your grandchild someday and have to explain why there is a panther jumping out of your arm. Don't make a permanent mistake on something so pointless. Be an individual by the merits of your character not but some fad you'll regret in a year. Good luck to ya.
I have 14 tattoos. There is truth in going big, because for some people, tattoos are addictive ---%26gt;waving here lol. What happens with small ones is that you end up with lots of little stuff that doesn't become one cohesive piece. I finally ';got that:'; and I am in process of my big piece which will most likely be my last. It is an Amy Brown Sprite above my sacred heart and waistline tribal.

The things that I would suggest are this: Start visiting shops and ask for pictures, it is best if they are full body pictures so that you have a good idea of what the big picture looks like. Secondly, if you are or ever will be working in an office, try to stick with the trunk of your body, because some offices get pissy about ink that shows. Also, if you wear low or no back dresses, make sure that what shows is tasteful.

Generally when I start brainstorming, I start a scrapbook, I slip things in there that I love, pictures from tattoo magazines, photocopies of artwork etc., Good luck and I would love to see the finished picture!
Get whatever u like. I personally think u should get a small one and see if u can tolerate the pain becuase as the tattoo gets bigger, the pain gets worse. Good Luck!!!!

What advice do you have for people that have to use the restroom in the middle of class?

    *******READ THIS BEFORE YOU ANSWER**********

In our school, there has been a recent incident and no student is allowed in the hall during class. We have a 5 minute break in between classes. We are not allowed to use passes and we have security cameras and hall guards all around the school. Well, today during Band class I had to pee really really bad and I felt like I would pee my pants. But thankfully I didn't. What advice do you have for people, like me, who have to use the restroom in the middle of class? What advice do you have for people that have to use the restroom in the middle of class?
You do know its illegal NOT to let you go to the toilet? What happened that was so bad you cant use the hallways? What advice do you have for people that have to use the restroom in the middle of class?
go before you get to class
    Go in the flute.

    ';Today, in band class, I.... ';
well to prevent going to the bathroom while the middle of the class simply dont drink water alot!
Stop eating a drinking, I guess. I mean it's ridiculous for anyone to keep you from going to the restroom! Tell your faculty members this can and WILL cause damage, and they are liable to face medical lawsuits.

What advice would you give to a new atheist?

Someone who has recently left church and supernatural belief of all kinds.I guess the advice I really need is how to stand strong on my own now. Thanks. What advice would you give to a new atheist?
Don't be intimidated by religious people, don't let the fact that you no longer have a religion take over your life, don't get mad at others for not sharing your lack of belief, don't let others get mad at you for having a lack of belief, don't be ashamed of it, give respect to other beliefs and expect it in return.

And for once, really, truly appreciate nature. It's so much more amazing when you understand how it truly came into existence. What advice would you give to a new atheist?
I'm a ';new'; atheist ( left superstitious beliefs in July/August) and what helped was forums like this one. Not only that but reading many books on philosophy, religion, science, and simply keeping my mind sharp. There is no clear-cut advice to give, every person their own experience depending on where they live, their family, and their own surroundings. I can only say to be informed, to try and use logic, and be simply you.

Well, when I left Christianity, I found that atheism was not the end, but a new beginning. Having figured out what I did not believe, I felt it necessary to create a coherent view of what I did believe.

Here is a site that I found useful: http://www.naturalism.org.
It can be difficult. We are constantly bombarded with religious propaganda of various kinds, but you just have to keep reminding yourself that it's all a load of bull. Atheism is growing, and the day will come when we are the majority rather than the oppressed minority. Keep that in mind, and welcome to our little club.
Live, learn, make mistakes, and take full responsibility for them. Forgive yourself for mistakes, and move on. Live each day by the second. Yesterday doesn't matter, nor does tomorrow. The next hour doesn't even matter.

Have fun, enjoy life, and keep an open mind about everything. There's one life, and whether there is or is not anything beyond that, you have to make the most of it. We live now, not 'then'.

Appreciate things like nature, the earth. It's all so amazing when you look at it. Study it. Microevolution, which is known by everyone, is a good start to understand evolution from millions of years ago.

Emotional wise - your mind is a conveyer belt. Emotions come and go, they never stay. Strength will come and go, sadness will come and go, happiness will come and go. But it's always there on the conveyer belt of your mind and will come back. Focus on happiness. Live by your heart. Be selfish sometimes. Do things for yourself.

Have good morals, but do them for your happiness.
If you haven't, I would suggest reading an atheist book or two. Most bookstores have an ';atheism'; section next to either philosophy or religion.

There are probably ways to find face-to-face contact with fellow atheists, if you don't any other atheists in person. I found a friendly atheist group that meets weekly on meetup.com, and I live in Oklahoma.

If there are issues with religious family and friends, you would probably know how to handle that best.

There are lots of websites for atheists now, and a lot of them have forums that can offer advice and share experience with newcomers. One of my favorites is Richard Dawkins's website, listed below. I don't visit their forums often but I know they have links to other good websites and a list of local atheist groups.
Hmm, well first questions.. Why is this under religion and spirituallity when you obviously HAVE none? But besides that id like to try to understand something else. Why would you WANT to stand strong on your own. I mean, isnt what humans do in life is find someone to connect with. Thats why we get married, why we have friends.

Why would you WANT to learn how to be all alone? I dont understand that. What i would say is to reconsider. Make sure that youhave FULLY thought about your decision.

But now i want to apologize! I sound SOO religious and full of myself. It is up to you but i just had to get my advice out there. GOOD LUCK with whatever you end up deciding to do.
Don't go out of your way to tell people that they're wrong about what they believe in. That isn't to say that you shouldn't actively defend atheism, but going around saying there is no God is rude and gives other Atheists a bad name.

    EDIT:

That's not to say that if a person starts bashing you, you shouldn't completely run circles around them with logic until they can't continue to argue with you.
    1. Don't listen to the religious people and their banter.

    2. you have to convince yourself to live in the current times. Don't think about anything that is near the end of your life, it will just give you headaches, trust me.
In time, having all responsibility for your own life will be less daunting. Remember: it's freeing.

Decide why you think right is right and wrong is wrong. Check out humanism, see if that works for you.
research the hell out of other belief systems so that when people start to question you, you can verbally beat them down with their own flaws and win the conversation
Ignore what every ignorant fool says to you.
remember the story of the prodigal son
take in all the information you can learn you never know what conclusion you come to after some true soul searching.
Learn science. Use logic. Don't get shaken up when a theist attacks you about your belief or lack-thereof.
    Read about Islam.
Keep looking and searching. You will find it at length.
    Be happy.
do not become militant like i did.
    Don't Listen To Paula.
Thank G-d we have a new member.
Just know that you're not alone.

I've been through this...she's been through it...and he's been through it.
Atheism ain't a social club, lady. We don't meet on Sundays and give each other false support.
Uh, read science books? It's nice to know what you do believe in. But as put before me ';This isn't a social club';.
explain how every person has a different fingerprint? without some Power?
Convert to Christianity. That way, you won't be standing on your own.
ask them to pray before God before he leaves and ask God if he lives?
    It's hell without Jesus.
god will always be with you
